Committed to sustainability - A greener Goodison Park
Sodexo’s commitment to Better Tomorrow 2025 includes goals to reduce food waste by at least 20 per cent in the UK, and to support our clients' efforts to reduce their own environmental impact and meet their sustainability goals. All plastic pint glasses served at Everton’s Goodison Park are now reusable. Sodexo, who manage catering and events at the Club, took up the challenge of working with the Club’s team to tackle the waste of 75,000 single-use plastic cups which were being thrown away across a single season.
At large sporting and leisure venues in particular, recycling disposable cups can be a challenge. We have forged partnerships with organisations such as Simply Cups and are working on a number of cup recycling schemes at major stadia and sporting venues.
At Goodison Park, a new scheme to reuse cups has been well received by the fans, who know that once they’ve finished their drinks, they can place the plastic glasses in designated recycling points around the ground. The glasses are then washed, ready to be used again and again — up to 100 times.
“The initiative is a key part of our environmental awareness campaign, ‘Everton for Change’,” explains Alix Craig, Stadium Development and Project Manager. “It has been great to see the Club and Sodexo team up to launch this scheme. Reusable cups will make a huge difference to the amount of single-use plastic used at Goodison Park and help us achieve our environmental goals.”
Sodexo’s Jo Wetherill, Catering Services Director at Goodison Park says reducing waste is a key element in helping Everton reduce the club’s carbon footprint. “These reusable cups make a huge difference to the amount of plastic used at Goodison Park, and make our work even greener”, she said.
